Letter from Archbishop Wuerl
Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,Jesus reminds us that we are children of the light. He came among us, sent by the Father, to help us know God and thus to know who we are and the ultimate meaning of life.
The Lord is our light and our salvation and he asks us to walk in his path. We are challenged to see the world around us and those in need from the perspective of the Gospel and the call we have received to be a light that helps dissipate the darkness of ignorance, fear, despair and the brokenness of the human condition.
Meeting the needs of others is so much of what the Church does. The Gospel instructs us to do so in a manner that makes clear and evident that we are trying to be God’s family, bringing the goodness of his light and love into the world around us.
As individuals we cannot always be there for someone in need, but collectively as the Church, we are able to be present in meeting the many spiritual, pastoral, educational, charitable and social concerns of our community. The Archbishop’s Appeal unites all 140 parishes of this archdiocese so together we may bring the light of Christ’s love to those in need. Through your pledge of support, you are an important part of this effort and share in the transforming action of our Church in the world.
Your gift provides among other things:
- Direct support and tuition assistance to students who might not otherwise have an opportunity to receive a Catholic education;
- Catholic chaplaincy ministry that brings comfort, consolation and the sacraments to the sick and dying;
- immediate and direct care through Catholic Charities to the homeless, the hungry, those in need of clothing, medical and dental care or help in knowing where to turn to find the assistance they need;
- ministry to people who are homebound, individuals with developmental disabilities and people in prisons;
- support and formation of our seminarians, and
- pro-life efforts so women can choose life for their unborn babies.
Please consider, out of your kindness and desire to bring Christ’s light to those in need, a gift that allows the Church to carry on together our work at the service of the Gospel.Together, we can truly be a reflection of the light of the Lord.
With gratitude for your kindness and with every good wish, I am
Faithfully in Christ,
(Most Reverend) Donald W. Wuerl
