What is the
Cardinal’s Appeal?
Once a year, the Archdiocese of
Washington conducts an appeal to support the mission and ministry of the
Archdiocese. People in all of our parishes and missions are asked to make a
significant financial commitment to this important cause.
- Why should I contribute?
- The Cardinal’s Appeal is an opportunity to share our financial gifts in order to help provide education, ministry and services throughout our community. Since we are not a congregational church, all parishioners are asked to support the central structure of our local Church. Every time that we say the Creed we reaffirm that we are members of the “one, holy, catholic and apostolic church.” We are saying that every parishioner is a part not only of his or her parish but also of the Universal Church. Each of us is responsible for the well being of the Church in our parish, throughout the Archdiocese and the world.
- How much of my donation will be used for administrative overhead?
- None. All of your donation—100%—goes directly to the programs and charities that are part of the Appeal. All administrative costs are paid for by the Archdiocese.
- Is there a minimum I need to donate?
- There is no minimum. All gifts are gratefully accepted and valued. The goal is for all Catholics to prayerfully consider a donation in accordance with the gifts God has given to them. Use the Personal Giving Guide to assist you in making your decision.
- Will you accept other forms of gifts besides a check?
- You may make a donation by check, credit card or automatic debit. We also gratefully accept gifts of stock.
- Are funds from the Cardinal’s Appeal used to pay legal bills or settlements involving clergy sexual abuse?
- No. Funds are used exclusively and solely to support the ministries described in this website and supporting printed materials. Find more information on the commitment by the Archdiocese to further the protection of children through prevention and healing.
- Whom do I contact for more information about the Appeal?
- Please call Kevin O’Connor, Executive Director of Development, at 301-853-4574.
