Cardinal McCarrick on Terri Schiavo's Death
March 31, 2005
Cardinal Theodore E. McCarrick, Archbishop of Washington, made the following statement upon learning of the death of Terri Schiavo:
“Today, we learned of Terri Schiavo’s death. One of the most important marks of a culture is how it treats the defenseless and the disabled in its midst. Terri’s death calls us to look deeply into our hearts as a nation and to ask if this is the culture we want to be. We need to choose: a culture of death or a culture of life?
"I pray that Terri’s death leads us to a new understanding of the dignity of human life, that it encourages Catholics and indeed all people of faith to renew their commitment to care for the defenseless and that no person in our nation ever dies in this way again.
"May Terri Schiavo rest in peace and may her family find peace in the embrace of God’s love. “
