St. Michael the Archangel Catholic School to Suspend Operations
February 22, 2012
After extensive consultation, St. Michael the Archangel parish in Silver Spring, Maryland, has announced that it will suspend the operation of its Catholic school at the end of this academic year.
Consultations were held with parents and guardians, administrators and teachers, parishioners and community members in the fall. However, declining enrollment and increasing operating deficits, despite significant archdiocesan tuition assistance, have led the pastor, Rev. Msgr. Eddie Tolentino, after consultation with advisory bodies, to make the recommendation to suspend school operations. This recommendation has been accepted by the Archdiocese of Washington, and families are being encouraged to attend neighboring Catholic schools.
One hundred fifty-six students are enrolled at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic School this year, down from 258 students in the 2002-2003 school year. The archdiocese and school leaders will work with currently-enrolled families to find a Catholic school that best fits their needs to ensure a smooth transition for their children.
“It has been very painful to realize we will no longer pass on the Gospel message to students within these classroom walls,” said Deacon Bert L’Homme, Superintendent of Catholic Schools for the archdiocese. “I am grateful to all those who participated in this consultation process and for their support of quality education for the students, especially the pastor, principals, faculty, staff, parents and parishioners.”
